Effectiveness of Acupressure

Stimulating the body’s natural self-healing abilities by applying pressure on the most important healing points of the human body, with the help of fingers, palms, elbow or even feet is known as Acupressure. It is an ancient Chinese art of healing and is said to be developed in Asia over 5000 years ago.

Effectiveness of Acupressure Treatment

Acupressure has proven to be very effective in curing various diseases related to stress. Acupressure can also actually reduce tension, relieve pain, increase blood circulation and develop one’s overall health. Apart from treating stress-related ailments, acupressure is also known to renew reproductive organs, detoxify the body and improve skin tone.

Acupressure therapy can help in strengthening resistance power and prevent the body from acquiring any unwanted diseases. This therapy can be self-implemented by learning about various techniques and pressure points so that you can self-cure certain medical conditions such as muscular pain, mental stress, learning disorders, emotional trauma and much more.

How Does This Work?

During Acupressure sessions, you will be asked to lie on a massage table (no need to take your clothes off). The therapist then starts gently applying pressure on your healing points and massaging them. Each session may last up to an hour or so. One needs to attend multiple sessions to achieve best results.

The actual goal of acupressure or any bodywork for that matter is to restore one’s overall health by regulating the positive and negative energies flowing in the body. Some people believe that Acupressure can not only treat energy fields but also mind, emotions as well as the spirit.

Common Acupuncture Points

There are numerous acupuncture points in the human body, too many to list down. However, the most important acupuncture and acupressure points that are commonly used by therapists are listed below:

Large intestine 4 (LI 4)

The acupuncture and acupressure point for treating ailments related to large intestine lies in the thick flesh between forefinger and the thumb.

Liver 3 (LR-3)

The acupuncture and acupressure point for treating diseases related to the liver lies between the big toe and the second toe.

Spleen 6 (SP-6)

The acupuncture and acupressure point for treating ailments related to the liver lies just above the ankle at a distance of 3 finger widths. This area of the lower calf muscle is very tender.

Who Can Benefit from Acupressure?

Though many people claim that acupressure can treat a whole lot of ailments, one has to admit that the therapy and its effectiveness to improve various health conditions is still not thoroughly proven. This method is a new treatment and proper research has to be made before making any statements such as, “Acupressure can treat so and so ailment effectively in this many weeks.”

Nevertheless, acupressure has helped improve certain medical conditions time and again. There is a little, but absolute proof that it can treat the following medical conditions:

– Nausea and vomiting:

Many studies have supported that a wrist acupressure can effectively treat nausea and vomiting that is caused due to various reasons such as:

Post surgery trauma and nausea

During or after injecting spinal anesthesia

After chemotherapy

Motion sickness

Pre and post pregnancy nausea

In most cases above, wrist acupressure has proven to be successful.

The acupuncture and acupressure point for treating nausea and vomiting, PC 6, is located in between the two nerves that start at the base of one’s palm. Specially designed wristbands that can control this medical condition are also available in the medical counter.

– Cancer:

Apart from reducing nausea after chemotherapy, according to many individual reports, acupressure is said to relieve tension, reduce stress, increase energy levels and lessen pain in cancer patients.

– Various Pains:

There is some preliminary evidence that acupressure can effectively reduce lower back pain, post-operative pain and trauma, and headache. Illnesses caused due to other medical conditions may also improve with the help of acupressure. As far as a headache is concerned, pressure is applied to the healing point

– Arthritis:

Studies show that by using acupressure on patients suffering from arthritis, the sensation of inflammation in the joints can be reduced considerably. The scientific reason stated behind this is, acupressure application releases endorphins that are capable of generating anti-inflammatory effects in the joints, thus reducing the suffering in arthritis patients.

– Depression and Anxiety:

Numerous studies conducted on various people have shown that acupressure can successfully reduce fatigue, depression and anxiety and improve the mood of an individual.

In general, acupressure is a safe therapy. However, it is advised that patients suffering from health conditions like cancer, arthritis, heart disease or any other chronic ailment should consult their physician before undergoing this therapy. Acupressure is just a precautionary measure.

Though acupressure therapy is still in its infant stage, most people who have undergone the treatment seem to be happy. For many people, this is undoubtedly one of the best therapies around that can lead one towards a healthy lifestyle, but the only catch here is, it has to be done only under the guidance of a qualified acupuncturist. Have a happy acupressure!

Would I Benefit From Acupuncture?

Many people have heard about acupuncture and the first comment is usually “Stick needles in me? No way!” In general, we fear that which do not know or the unfamiliar, especially if we think pain is involved.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine; it has been in practice for more than 2000 years! Acupuncture has provided billions of successful treatments with minimal side effects for centuries. In 1978 WHO, (World Health Organization) recognized acupuncture as a valid medical modality for treatment of various diseases and conditions.

Despite the success and history of acupuncture, for many, the fear of needles is greater than the potential health benefits. If you are among those who have a fear of needles, you are not alone. Unlike getting a shot, acupuncture does not hurt. Sensation of tingling or mild electric sensation is possible. The acupuncture needle is so thin, thinner than a strand of your hair. In fact, approximately 14 acupuncture needles can fit in the hollow needle used for a standard blood draw. Think about that the next time your doctor orders a blood test!

A licensed acupuncturist will use a single use sterile acupuncture needle recognized by FDA as a medical instrument. Acupuncture is a healing art; causing pain diminishes the body’s ability to heal, which is contraindicative of the goal of providing healing. The trained acupuncturist is skilled in placing the needles to maximize healing without discomfort or pain.

Take a moment and think of the benefits, put the needle fear behind you and try acupuncture. After a treatment or two, you may begin to notice the benefits of acupuncture. In fact, you will most likely fall in love with this ancient, healing technique. Especially as your pain is reduced, stress becomes manageable, sleep comes easier and better, your digestion and heartburn are eased or your migraines are a thing of the past! We all suffer from any one of the above items at some point or another and an acupuncture treatment is a great solution.

In addition to the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in the treatment of many diseases, acupuncture offers excellent support for healthy weight loss, addiction treatments including smoking.

Have you noticed a friend suddenly looking different? Healthier, looking like they just received a facelift but there are no scars or swelling? In recent decades acupuncture has become widely used for cosmetic purposes leaving patient with a younger healthier appearance.

Bitter melon can increase our body’s capability to utilize blood glucose naturally. Anything that raises the blood circulation greatly benefits in lessening the headache issue.

We would choose to prevent prescription drugs when possible, and for these patients, acupuncture for high blood pressure might be a terrific choice to look at. You also ought to know about acupuncture as it’s the safest approach to induce labor and has the largest success rate. In reality, documented research on the potency of acupuncture and acupuncture keeps growing. For example, applying too large an amount of pressure can compel the body to tense, while not enough pressure will result in insufficient results.

Natural remedies aren’t only controlled blood glucose, however at the same time; it’ll manage kidney, liver, eye and hearts. The aggregate of pressure exerted will vary conditioned upon the aim of the session. With deeper pressure, you are going to feel a pulse in the center honestly.

Acupuncture Education

Picking an acupuncturist might be confusing. Unless you have a referral to one from a friend or family member that’s been to one, you’re stuck looking on the internet or, if you’re not internet savvy, using the Yellow Pages. Hopefully, this article will help you to know what to look for and what questions you might want to ask as you begin your search.

Personally, I practice acupuncture in California and all practitioners here must pass the state boards from the California Acupuncture Board. Upon passing, the practitioner is given the title Licensed Acupuncturist, abbreviated L.Ac. We use this title after our name, as in John Smith, L.Ac. In order to take the exam, the practitioner must graduate from an accredited acupuncture school. Currently this is a master’s program (the longest masters program in the nation), but many schools are turning towards doctoral programs. The master’s degree may differ by title from school to school. Degrees might be master of science in acupuncture, master of science in traditional Oriental medicine, master of science in Chinese medicine, and others. While the title of the master isn’t important, it is important that the practitioner be licensed in the state. So, make sure to look for the L.Ac title when doing your search.

As I mentioned, many schools are turning to the doctoral program. Since this will soon be the only option, like chiropractors and pharmacists, schools are offering additional doctoral programs for practitioners that have already been practicing with their master degree. Once again, these titles differ from school to school. Options are Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM), Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM), Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM) or Doctor of Acupuncture (DAc).

I do want to mention, that some schools, in the 1980’s, were known to hand out a degree giving the title Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) to graduates with only approximately 1200 hours of education and no undergraduate degree. As time passed, the amount of schooling was increased and undergraduate prerequisites were required. Knowing this, don’t be afraid to ask the practitioner how many hours of training they had in school.

The education received by acupuncturists is very complete and offers much more than just Chinese medicine. Today’s graduates are getting an actual master of science degree. Each student takes a full year of anatomy classes. Students also take classes in physiology, chemistry, physics, biology, 2 pathology classes, 2 clinical differentiation and diagnosis classes. During schooling, students are taking classes every semester in Chinese medicine theory, single herb training, herbal formulas, acupuncture points and acupuncture technique. Students also spend time in clinic every semester working with patients. The first few semester involves observing, the next few in assisting and finally the student works as an intern. All of these are done under the direct supervision of a licensed acupuncturist.

Hopefully, this will help you a little bit in establishing a practitioners credentials and finding a practitioner right for you.

Bret Ellington is an acupuncturist specializing in treating migraines. He is the owner of Inner Balance Acupuncture, located in south Orange County, California. Graduating with a Master of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine and a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Bret is licensed in the state of California and nationally. His practice is typically full, so he helps other practitioners to find their niche in the field and bring patients together with the practitioners that can help them out the most.

Stress and Acupuncture

All living beings have some level of stress. It’s part of the natural process of life. Your mind and body react to both positive and negative triggers for stress. Whether positive or negative in nature, certain experiences generate a stress reaction, which subsequently has a direct effect on the body.

Benefits and Detriments of Stress

Your body’s response to stress in the short-term helps you deal with difficult situations. Your body releases hormones, raises your heart rate, and increases your breathing. As a result, your brain gets more oxygen, which gives you a definite advantage in dealing with the source of your stress. Thus, momentary stress is beneficial because it helps you function better. However, continued and chronic stress causes many negative symptoms and is detrimental to your overall health.

Alleviating Stress

When people think of alleviating stress, they usually think of things like long hot baths, warm oil massages, cozy catnaps, meditation, or a large glass of wine. They don’t usually think of acupuncture. However, over the centuries acupuncture has been used to treat anxiety, pain, stress, and other forms of discomfort and disease in the body. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and is still used by many, even many high-profile people in the world.

Acupuncture for Stress Relief

The hub of Traditional Chinese Medicine is acupuncture. It has been used for centuries in the treatment of many ailments, specifically in pain management. The idea of needles being placed in your skin may be a source of stress in itself, but actually, the placing of the special acupuncture needles into the energy nodes of the body relieves blockages interfering with the flow of qi (pronounced chee), or the life force. Many well-known actors, athletes, politicians, singers, and models get regular acupuncture treatments to help them manage stress and promote their overall health, just ask supermodel Elle Macpherson who gets regular acupuncture treatments. Actually, many people from all walks of life have found the benefits of acupuncture for relief from stress and stress symptoms.

New scientific studies are showing that acupuncture really has a biological response in the human body. In these recent studies, stress hormone levels are shown to be considerably diminished in laboratory animals that are given acupuncture treatments. Doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine have known for a long, long time that the healing practice of acupuncture helps reduce stress and anxiety in those patients who receive it, while it supports their general health and wellbeing.

Presently, there are some health centers, mental health clinics, and rehabilitation centers that offer acupuncture as part of their treatment options, and it might even be covered by your insurance. We can only hope that acupuncture becomes more and more accessible to everyone in order for people to deal with the many stressors of the modern age.

We Can Help

Despite there being many triggers for stress, the effects are ultimately the same. Stress makes you feel imbalanced, and oftentimes overwhelmed.

Stress: Research Shows How Acupuncture Helps

Some people don’t see stress as a big problem because it is a natural aspect of life. Nevertheless, many health concerns come from the ravages of stress. Many of the world’s greatest health concerns come from the harsh effects of continued stress on the body. Heart disease, obesity, headaches, sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and digestive problems have all been directly linked to stress.

Dealing with Stress

Everyone wants to lead a happy and healthy life. Unfortunately for many, stress creates myriad health problems that result in a less than optimal situation in their lives. People deal with stress in a variety of ways. Some of those ways can be just as or more detrimental than the stress itself. If you are abusing drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or food to alleviate stress, then you are definitely on the wrong path.

If you are dealing with stress or anxiety in a way that is either ineffectual or harmful, you should consider acupuncture and its related treatments. Acupuncture could help you have more calm, serene days and restful, sleep-filled nights. Unfortunately, until recently there was a dearth of biological evidence proving how this occurs. A new study on stress and acupuncture is giving new insights into the biological processes.

A Study on the Benefits of Acupuncture for Stress Relief

According to study researcher Dr. Ladan Eshkevari, who is an associate professor of nursing at Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies, this new study explores the biological mechanisms involved in acupuncture’s stress-relieving properties and helps us “understand what’s going on at a molecular level that helps explain acupuncture’s benefit.”

The researchers discovered that stress hormones were lower in rats that had received electronic acupuncture. Their results were published in the Journal of Endocrinology. They were able to show that the healing practice of acupuncture reduces stress and anxiety in those who receive it.

The human body secretes a cocktail of hormones into the bloodstream in reaction to stress, whether positive or negative. The researchers were then able to measure these same hormones in rats. They checked hormone levels secreted by the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal gland and also measured a peptide involved in the “fight or flight” responses.

The researchers discovered that the acupuncture the rats received blocked “the chronic, stress-induced elevations of the HPA axis hormones and the sympathetic NPY pathway,” according to Dr. Eshkevari.

Clearly, there is a biological basis for the positive results people have been experiencing for hundreds of years. Acupuncture and its related treatments are a boon for anyone who is dealing with chronic stress or anxiety or the health problems associated with stress or anxiety. Consider getting a few treatments to experience the benefits of acupuncture first hand.

Acupuncture for Hormone Therapy

As a woman, we know the state of our sexual health and changes in our periods can be a great indicator of overall health and health problems.

A work colleague had recently been to see her doctor, saying she’d been gaining weight, had irregular periods and was just feeling generally fatigued and listless.

It turns out she had an undiagnosed case of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which was playing havoc with her hormones, massively increasing the amount of testosterone in her body.

As anyone who has heard of this condition knows, it can have huge implications on how you live your life, including for fertility and reproductive health.

As well as generally messing with the body by destroying the delicate balance of hormones it needs to keep itself stable and healthy.

My friend said the doctor had prescribed her Metformin and hormone stabilising tablets. Apparently, they were working, but she wasn’t particularly happy with the idea of taking pills for the rest of her life, so she was looking into other options.

How does hormone imbalance affect me?

A woman’s body requires two main hormones to function. Estrogen and progesterone. It’s these hormones that control the reproductive cycle, menstrual cycle and fertility in women, as well as having major effects on mood and general health.

So it stands to reason that a hormone imbalance causes major issues with a woman’s reproductive cycle, including irregular periods, menstrual problems, mood swings, weight gain, increased chance of osteoporosis, heart disease, and even breast cancer.

Whilst there are multiple reasons that a woman could develop a hormone imbalance, such as stress, diet, or weight gain, the two biggest factors are generally birth control pills and the perimenopause stage of life.

Hormone based birth control pills rely on high doses of estrogen to prevent ovulation, as well as progestin, synthetic progesterone, to thin out the lining of the uterus. Because of the way they work, hormonal birth control pills contain doses of estrogen up to four times higher than would naturally be found in a woman’s body during her menstrual cycle.

Then menopause also causes major changes in a woman’s hormone cycle. As your ovaries age, they naturally release lower levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which cause major changes in your body and can have huge negative effects on health and quality of life for years to come.

Whilst there are many ways to treat this, including hormone replacement therapy and other hormone balancing medication, there are a wealth of other options, including one that many people might otherwise overlook.

What is acupuncture?

Used in the east as a traditional treatment for centuries, acupuncture is an alternative therapy that is becoming widely accepted, to the point that many reputed and high level medical sources have begun to offer acupuncture treatment alongside more conventional medical treatments.

The therapy itself involves inserting thin needles into key points around the body, generally along nerve lines or around specific organs.

According to the traditional understanding, the body is full of energy, generally called Chi, or Ki.

It’s this energy that keeps us alive, and it is believed that inhibiting the flow of it around the body, especially through key points, is what leads to illness and disease.

Under Eastern philosophy, the needles used in acupuncture unlock the flow of energy in these points when they are blocked, balancing your life energy so that the body can heal itself naturally.

In the west, where research on acupuncture is ongoing, the way it works is thought to be neurophysiological in nature, but it is still not completely understood.

It is known that the insertion of acupuncture needles has definite effects on the body, causing nerve stimulation that release muscles and even override brain signals.

There are also measurable changes in body chemicals in patients undergoing treatment.

Whilst it may not be completely understood, the benefits of acupuncture treatment are widely accepted…

To the point that it is regularly available as an alternative treatment from most medical practitioners, and more research studies are being completed every year in an effort to understand just how acupuncture delivers all of its healing properties.

Can acupuncture balance our hormones?

When it comes to hormone imbalance, the studies are clear.

Women who received daily acupuncture sessions showed massive improvements in multiple areas, comparable to the results shown by women tested at the same time with prescription metformin pills.

Both groups showed significant improvement in levels of male hormone in the blood, as well as massive changes in cholesterol levels, insulin markers and blood glucose.

Incredibly, the women who were prescribed acupuncture actually lost more weight and saw a far quicker response when it came to balancing their menstrual cycles.

On top of this, multiple other studies have shown that regular treatments of acupuncture can have healthful effects all over the body, including stabilising fat burning hormones productions by the kidneys and liver, as well as the production of the happy hormones dopamine and serotonin in the brain.

As for my friend, she started a course of acupuncture at the local health centre. Within two weeks, she was getting back to her old self, and had nothing but good things to say about the staff and the treatment. According to her, she wasn’t the only woman being treated for her condition there, and the amount of people and illnesses they saw was apparently staggering.

So if you have a hormonal issue and your doctor prescribes you a course of pills, always remember that as always you do have other options. Acupuncture is available all over the country, so just search for your closest practitioner and book yourself a short course.

Acupuncture For Emotional Well Being

The art of acupuncture therapy spans back thousands of years to ancient China and has been refined over this long period of time. Practitioners of this ancient, holistic practice are skilled health professionals that take pride in their work and consider it to be a craft that has been passed down through generations.

Becoming licensed as a practitioner requires at least two hundred hours of hands on job experience under the supervision of a skilled, licensed practitioner in a clean facility. So, if you choose to use the services of a licensed acupuncturist you know you can expect a quality experience.

Acupuncture is the therapy of using thin needles inserted into strategic trigger points on the body to re-balance the body’s natural energy to prevent or treat various medical conditions. The nervous system and vital organs of the body may not be functioning at optimum levels so re-balancing is necessary.

The treatment of acupuncture therapy has grown in popularity in America, especially in the last decade. Many physicians are looking for alternatives to prescription drug therapy treatments because many patients are suffering severe adverse side effects to these pills.

Potential side effects from various mental health medications include:

• Excessive weight gain
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Lack of appetite
• Restlessness
• Dry mouth
• Increased risk of suicidal tendencies
• Insomnia
• Gastrointestinal issues
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Using acupuncture for emotional well being

Acupuncture has been used to treat illnesses but many Americans use it to prevent various illnesses. When used regularly as a prevention method, disharmony in the body can be prevented well before any potential problems.

Benefits of acupuncture

• Allows the body to release pain-reducing endorphins
• Stimulates circulation and the natural flow of energy in the body
• Promotes firing of neurotransmitters in the brain that promote happiness and good mood
• Reduces inflammation and swelling in the body
• Promotes electrical impulses in the body that drive emotional well being
• Affects the release of hormones in the body and promotes hormonal balance which can affect the onset of many mental health conditions
• Aids in self regulation of all nervous system and central system functions

Many scientific studies have been conducted that prove without a doubt that acupuncture therapy works to treat ailments that modern medicine has not been able to fully treat, like fibromyalgia.

Anyone that suffers from nerve related conditions like fibromyalgia know that any relief is a blessing, especially on days when just putting clothes on feels like your body is on fire.

Many Americans with chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia suffer from mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Acupuncture has given many of these people their lives back and allowed them to regain employment and have familial relationships that they didn’t have before.

Acupuncture has given many with emotional instability issues the opportunity to be treated with methods that are not going to cause them other ailments. Excessive weight gain as a side effect of mental health medications has increased the obesity epidemic in America to the point that diabetes is one of the number one killers in this country.

Acupuncture therapy has allowed many to be taken off mental health medications, reduce their weight, and prevent diabetes.

Perfect Union of Body & Mind have been practicing Acupuncture in Boca for many years now. Heal yourself with the traditional Chinese Acupuncture therapy and get instant relief from depression, anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue, insomnia etc.

Infertility and Acupuncture

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a child after trying conceive naturally for two years, due to defects in the reproductive system of the man or women, or both. While in women it is because of hormone imbalance, abnormal function of ovaries, fibroids or endometriosis, in men it is due to problems such as low sperm count or motility. The word infertility can also be used to describe a woman has multiple miscarriages. Infertility may have many psychological effects on the couple trying to conceive. The more anxious the partners may become to conceive, the more it affects their reproductive health.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method of medical treatment which consists of the use of thin, sterile, disposable needles to stimulate strategic points near the surface of the body. Chinese practitioners believe that there are certain acupuncture points on the body which connect the flow of energy from the surface of the body to the internal organs. This flow of energy is vital in regulating emotional, physical and spiritual balance in an individual. Poor health habits and lack of adequate physical exercise disrupts this flow of energy and results in pain or disease. Acupuncture makes the flow of energy smoothly so the uterus and ovaries can get good energy flow.

Acupuncture for Infertility

A key factor in the infertility of both men and women is stress. When under stress, the brain releases a hormone called cortisol. This disrupts the chemical balance of the brain, thus altering the hormone levels in the body and compromise the ovarian function. According to several studies and medical research, acupuncture can promote fertility by increasing the flow of blood to the reproductive organs, reducing stress, and keeping the hormone system balanced. Acupuncture for infertility aims not just to make conception possible, but also to help the woman carry the child to full term in good health.

Benefits of Acupuncture over Fertility Drugs

Fertility drugs only works for the couples who already get their reproductive system in good balance. Ideally it would be the best to start acupuncture for infertility treatment 3 to 6 months before you start the IVF or IUI. Acupuncture for infertility improves the testicle and ovarian function, so the couples can get healthy baby with one IVF or IUI treatment. If the couple keeps trying many IVF cycles, the artificial hormones can profoundly influence the whole body, causing future health issues such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer or early menopause. On the other hand, since acupuncture infertility treatment is non invasive and natural, it causes few or no side effects.
